1# Clear the Ground
Start by removing all existing grass, weeds, and debris from the area. Make sure to clear the surface completely to give your new turf the best foundation.

#2 Prepare the Soil
Rotavate or dig over the ground, breaking up the soil while removing stones, plant roots, and weeds. This will create a well-draining, nutrient-rich base for your turf.

#4 Level the Ground
Use a rake to level the ground, ensuring it’s even and smooth. Pack the soil down to create a firm base for your turf.

#5 Lay the Turf
Using a longboard to stand on, begin laying your turf. Lay each piece as though you're building a brick wall, staggering the seams so the joints don’t line up. This helps create a seamless, natural look.

#6 Water Immediately
After laying the turf, water it thoroughly. Turf needs plenty of water in the first 2-3 weeks to root properly, so water it daily. Don’t rely on rainfall, as it's often insufficient.

#3 Add Topsoil (if Needed)
Rotavate or dig over the ground, breaking up the soil while removing stones, plant roots, and weeds. This will create a well-draining, nutrient-rich base for your turf.

#7 First Mow
After 2-3 weeks, when your lawn is well-rooted, it’s time to give it its first cut. Be gentle and avoid cutting it too short to maintain healthy growth.

Additional Lawn Laying Tips from Medway Landscapes
-
Accurate Measurements: Avoid guessing the size of your lawn. Measure the area accurately to ensure you order enough turf.
-
Plan for Irregular Shapes: If your lawn has an irregular shape, order extra turf rolls, as you may need to trim pieces to fit. Reuse offcuts wherever possible to minimise waste.
-
Avoid Turf Damage: Don’t leave rolled-up turf in the heat, as it will turn yellow and may rot. Laying and watering it quickly is essential.
-
Soil and Path Edging: If laying turf next to a path, level the soil with the path, then lay the turf on top. The turf will settle to the perfect height.
-
Turf Shrinkage: If your turf shrinks after laying, it likely needs more water. Give it a deep soak to encourage growth.
-
Limit Foot Traffic: To avoid footprints and depressions, avoid walking on your new lawn for at least 2-3 weeks.
